Why Journaling Has Become Part of My Life (and Part of Unpack, Grow & Glow)
I went through a time when my mind felt like 37 browser tabs were open all at once… and somehow every single one was playing music. No silence. No peace. Just constant noise.
Thought after thought would race through my head from the moment I woke up until the moment I finally fell asleep. Some days it felt like I had hundreds of thoughts competing for my attention all at one time.
What do I need to do today?
Did I forget something?
What if this doesn’t work out?
Why did they say that?
Why did I say that?
What should I do next?
Am I doing enough?
What if this plan falls apart?
Worries. To-do lists. Old memories. Future plans. Random conversations from three years ago that suddenly decide to resurface throughout the day. Just… everything.
I’ve always been an overthinker. That’s nothing new. But lately, it felt amplified. I was starting to wonder if it was simply part of getting older and carrying more responsibilities through different stages of life. Because let’s be honest. The older we get, the more we carry.
We carry responsibilities.
We carry stress.
We carry family concerns.
We carry work pressure.
We carry emotional weight.
We carry expectations—both from others and ourselves.
If we’re not careful, all of that starts living in our minds rent-free. That was me. Mentally overloaded. Emotionally exhausted. Constantly thinking. I knew something had to change. I needed a healthier way to process everything I was carrying mentally and emotionally.
That’s when journaling entered my life (I know… I’m very late to the party). At first, I assumed journaling was just writing about your day.
You know… Dear Diary energy.
I pictured pages filled with daily events.
Today I went to the store.
Today I made coffee.
Today I folded laundry and questioned all of my life choices.
Cute. But not exactly life-changing.
What I found was something a lot more powerful. Journaling became less about documenting my day and more about releasing what was weighing me down. From there, everything began to shift.
Journaling Gave My Thoughts Somewhere to Go
Here’s the thing nobody really talks about:
Most of the time, the biggest problem isn’t what we’re carrying, it’s that we’re carrying all of it internally. We keep everything trapped in our minds.
The stress.
The worries.
The fears.
The frustration.
The dreams.
The goals.
The unanswered questions.
And after a while, your mind starts feeling crowded. Journaling gave all of that somewhere to go. Instead of letting my thoughts bounce around endlessly in my head, I started putting them on paper. No filter, no pressure, no perfect grammar or pretty handwriting required. Just honesty. Some days I wrote full pages and some days I wrote messy little brain dumps.
Some days it was just one sentence:
I’m overwhelmed today.
Even that helped because healing starts with being honest about how you feel.
Writing Helped Me Slow Down
One thing I noticed almost immediately? Writing slowed my thoughts down. When everything stays in your head, thoughts move fast.
Too fast.
One thought triggers another, and another, and before you know it, your mind has created 15 fake scenarios and 12 imaginary arguments.
All before breakfast.
But writing forces you to slow down. It makes you process one thought at a time and separate real concerns from anxious overthinking.
It also helps you identify patterns.
When you see your thoughts written down, you realize something important: Not every thought deserves your energy.
Just because you think something doesn’t mean it’s true, just because you worry about something doesn’t mean it will happen, and just because your mind is loud doesn’t mean everything requires immediate attention. That realization alone was powerful for me.
Journaling Helped Me Understand Myself Better
This might be one of the biggest benefits. Journaling helped me get honest with myself. Really honest. It helped me recognize what was triggering my stress and see the things I was avoiding.
It helped me identify recurring thought patterns. It even helped me notice where I was holding onto things that no longer served me. And sometimes the truth was uncomfortable. Sometimes I realized I was overthinking situations I couldn’t control. Carrying emotions I hadn’t fully processed. Exhausted from trying to be everything for everybody.
Because a lot of us, especially women, carry so much while still trying to show up for everyone else. We pour and pour and pour. Meanwhile, nobody notices we’re running low. Journaling became one way I started checking in with me.
Not with everyone else.
Me.
How am I feeling?
What’s bothering me?
What do I need right now?
What deserves my attention?
What needs to be released?
That level of self-awareness can transform your life.
Journaling Became a Form of Self-Care
And no, I’m not talking about the aesthetic version of self-care. Not candles, cozy blankets or pretty pens.
Although I fully support and participate in all of that too.
I’m talking about the kind of self-care that helps you mentally and emotionally. The kind that creates peace. The kind that helps you process life in a healthier way.
Journaling became that for me. It gave me space to pause, breathe, reflect, release and reset. And that mattered more than I realized.
Why Journaling Is Part of Unpack, Grow & Glow
This website is about helping women unpack life’s lessons, grow through every season, and glow from the inside out. While inspirational quotes and topics can spark reflection, true growth happens when we take time to explore what those words mean in our own lives. That’s why journaling will be woven throughout much of the content that you find there.
As we unpack together, explore personal growth topics, discuss mindset shifts, and navigate life’s challenges, there will often be journaling prompts designed to help us go deeper (myself as well because I’m unpacking and journaling right along with you). And while we won’t be striving to find perfect answers, we will be creating space for honest reflection.
If You’ve Been Feeling Mentally Overloaded…
I want to say this to you.
You do not have to carry everything in your head. Not every fear needs to stay trapped in your mind. Not every worry needs to sit on your shoulders.
Not every thought deserves permanent residency in your mental space. Sometimes you just need to let it out. Journaling can help you do exactly that.
Start simple.
Write what you feel.
Write what you’re carrying.
Write what’s stressing you out.
Write what you’re grateful for.
Write what you need.
Just start.
The first step toward peace is getting everything out of your head and onto paper. And trust me… your mind will thank you.
Journal Prompts to Get Started
If you’re not sure what to write, start here:
- What has been weighing heavily on my mind lately?
- What thoughts keep replaying in my head?
- What am I holding onto that I need to release?
- What is currently stealing my peace?
- What do I need more of in this season of life?
Gentle Reminder
You don’t have to figure everything out today.
You don’t have to solve every problem overnight.
And you definitely don’t have to carry every thought all by yourself.
Give Your Mind Permission to Exhale.
Sometimes healing looks like therapy.
Sometimes healing looks like rest.
And sometimes healing looks like sitting down with a journal and finally being honest with yourself.
Either way, protecting your peace matters.
And so do you. 💛
